Light golden in color with brilliant clarity, the J. Wilkes 2016 Chardonnay opens with dominating aromas of ripe pear, green apple and lime zest. Deeper exploration shows hints of lemon-lime soda, touches of French oak and fresh minerality. The palate is broad, savory and delicious and begs to be paired with pastas dressed with butter and lightly grated Parmeson, seafood with butter/cream sauces, fish and chips, or fried shrimp.

The Miro 2015 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the Silverwood Vineyard, located almost at the top of Cloverdale's Pine Mountain - the newest appellation in Sonoma County. Perched at 2,200 feet elevation above the meandering Russian River Valley, this vineyard site is as rugged as it gets - extreme viticulture, if you will! The allure of mountain grapes is the extended sunshine and more intense solar radiation, and this Cabernet Sauvignon certainly benefits from these conditions. On the nose, ample aromas of wild blue and blackberries are layered over hints of minerality, cinnamon, dark chocolate and dusty cocoa. The mouth feel is of a big wine with significant, but soft, tannins, that finishes long and nicely balanced.

The J. Wilkes 2017 “Kent’s Red” is a blend of 90% Barbera and 10% Lagrein from the renowned Paso Robles Highlands District on California’s Central Coast. The high temperature swing, in the Paso Robles Highlands District, slows the ripening rate of the fruit on the vine and allows flavors to develop, which is especially important when crafting bold, complex red blends like the J. Wilkes 2017 “Kent’s Red.” This wine opens with incredibly seductive aromas of blackberry, huckleberry, and freshly berry pie. The palate is dry, but very fruity with dark berry flavors and just the right balance of bright, deep, and elegant nuances. Suggested food pairings for the J. Wilkes 2017 “Kent’s Red” include barbecued steak, pork, or beef stew.

As one of the tiniest boutique producers in Napa Valley, the Kelly Family Vineyards crafts limited amounts of premium Cabernet Sauvignon from the Kelly family’s 10-acre property in the esteemed Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. On the nose, there is a nice intensity of aromas with bright fruit notes and hints of cherries, spice, and just a touch of earth. On the palate, there is astounding balance and weight with flavors of red fruit and underlying notes of chocolate and eucalyptus that linger on the finish. This Cabernet Sauvignon was blended with Napa Valley Merlot, which gives the wine its velvety soft texture and elegance and adds to the complexity of dark fruit notes. A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot.

Athair’s 2012 ‘Georges III Vineyard’ Cabernet Sauvignon comes from one of the most prized vineyards in Napa Valley that produces fruit with the famous ‘Rutherford Dust’ aromatic profile. Deep violet in color, this wine opens with attractive notes of dark cherries, blueberries, and blackberries with hints of cobbler, dark chocolate, sandalwood spice, and smoked nuts. The palate is rich, full-bodied and complex with lingering flavors of dark fruit, chocolate covered cherries, earth, and a hint of vanilla, light oak, and peppery spice on the finish. The soft tannins make this wine delicious now, but it will continue to evolve in the cellar for many years to come.

The Malagón 2017 Grenache Blanc comes from winery owners Jose and Rachel Malagón’s estate vineyard in the Valle de Guadalupe in Baja California, Mexico. Grenache Blanc, a varietal mostly found in Rhône wine blends in France and northeastern Spain, is a unique varietal to Baja, as there are only a few current producers. This wine offers bright citrus aromas, a rich, full body with clean flavors of fresh apple, minerality, and a touch of peach. Its crisp acidity lingers on the long finish. This Grenache Blanc is an excellent pairing to authentic shrimp ceviche or sea bass.

A blend of 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 25% Tempranillo, and 11% Cabernet Franc, the Roganto 2016 Piccolo Vino Tinto de la Casa was made in honor of Francisco Maria Piccolo, an Italian missionary who was chiefly responsible for introducing vines and olives in the region of Baja California. The 2016 Piccolo offers fruity aromas and flavors, with notes of blackcurrant dominating the palate. Notes of French and American oak and another layer of complexity to the flavors and a soft tannin structure that lingers on the finish.

A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Syrah, the Solar Fortún 2016 ‘O Positivo’ is a full-bodied powerhouse wine that shows wonderful balance between intensity, freshness, and fruitiness. Interestingly, all of the vines at the Solar Fortún estate were grown from cuttings from Napa Valley (French Mercier Nursery) and speak to the high level of grape quality at this Baja California winery. Deep violet in color, this wine blends notes of black cherry, spices, vanilla, plum, and cocoa on a rich, full body with soft, well-structured tannins. The finish is long, smooth, and persistent. Solar Fortún recommends pairing the 2016 ‘O Positivo’ Red Blend with semi-sweet mole with chicken or steak cuts.
